Sunset Point Ground Breaking Celebration

On Tuesday, November 14, 2006, the Belle Isle Women¹s Committee (BIWC) broke ground to celebrate Phase I of the Sunset Point project renovation. Sunset Point is located on the western-most tip of Belle Isle.

Sarah Earley, president and founder of BIWC was joined by BIWC board members; Roland Day, landscape architect; Melanie Odom, Vice President of Civic Affairs of Comerica Bank; Loren Jackson, Director of Detroit Parks and Recreation; and Sandy Banks, Program Officer for Masco Foundation. These individuals joined together to honor the BIWC¹s commitment to renew Belle Isle¹s splendor.

The BIWC, formed in 2004, and has raised more than $500,000. Those funds will complete Phase I of the Sunset Point in the fall of 2007, including sidewalks, a plaza with benches and enhanced landscaping.

Phases II and III of the project will incorporate a new comfort station, additional sidewalks, lighting, landscaping and off-street parking at the site. Money raised at the 2007 "Polish the Jewel" luncheon will support Phases II and III.

2006 Polish the Jewel Luncheon
Held at the Detroit Yacht Club. Attended by over 380 women (and a few brave men).
