On Tuesday, November 14, 2006, the Belle Isle Women¹s Committee (BIWC) broke
ground to celebrate Phase I of the Sunset Point project renovation. Sunset
Point is located on the western-most tip of Belle Isle.
Sarah Earley, president and founder of BIWC was joined by BIWC board members;
Roland Day, landscape architect; Melanie Odom, Vice President of Civic
Affairs of Comerica Bank; Loren Jackson, Director of Detroit Parks and
Recreation; and Sandy Banks, Program Officer for Masco Foundation. These
individuals joined together to honor the BIWC¹s commitment to renew Belle
Isle¹s splendor.
The BIWC, formed in 2004, and has raised more than $500,000. Those funds
will complete Phase I of the Sunset Point in the fall of 2007, including
sidewalks, a plaza with benches and enhanced landscaping.
Phases II and III of the project will incorporate a new comfort station,
additional sidewalks, lighting, landscaping and off-street parking at the
site. Money raised at the 2007 "Polish the Jewel" luncheon will support
Phases II and III.
